The People’s National Party (PNP) has named its long-anticipated Shadow Cabinet, amid internal conflicts that continue to rock the organization. It is the view of one Political Commentator, that leader, Dr. Peter Phillips’ picks for the Shadow Cabinet and Senate are not the best choice and his decision could have been influenced by internal differences.
The People’s National Party’s Shadow Cabinet includes seven of the party’s eight Senators and eleven elected Members of Parliament. The Shadow Cabinet sees two political newcomers, Lothan Cousins, who is the Member of Parliament for South West Clarendon. Cousins is shadowing the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. While Senator Janice Allen will be leading the charge on Tourism.
Other noted appointments are Angela Brown Burke’s designation to Education, which was previously held by Peter Bunting and Janice Allen being appointed to Tourism taking over from former Vice President of the PNP, Wykeham McNeill, who lost his seat.
CVM LIVE spoke with Dr. Garnett Roper about the Party’s appointments. He says, he is surprised at the absence of former Member of Parliament for Manchester Central, Peter Bunting, who has been an outstanding performer. For the most part, Dr. Roper says, Dr. Peter Phillips’ picks for the Senate and the Cabinet do not make a strong Opposition. He says the practice of the PNP to not appoint Candidates who lost their seats in the Senate, will in no way assist the party at this time. He says this will hamper the effectiveness of the PNP Senate when they go up against the JLP majority, especially since it is not the strongest line up.
