A new fire station in Port Maria St Mary an investment of 258 million Jamaican dollars, to improve fire and emergency services to 48 communities in and around the parish. During the official opening of the fire station on Friday, Prime Minister Andrew Holness noted the progress as he said the previous fire station was a small, antiquated building which closed in 2006.
Meanwhile, Local Government Minister Desmond Mckenzie says more personal responsibility is needed to prevent fires. He says during 2022, over 1000 persons lost their homes to fire, while 24 people died as a result of a fire.
