For the past three days, residents of Port Royal have been without electricity. The residents say calls to the Jamaica Public Service, (JPS) have fallen on deaf ears. Fisherfolk in the area have been greatly impacted and are calling for the JPS to act with urgency.
One Port Royal resident expressing displeasure at the Jamaica Public Service, the residents say their power has been disconnected since Tuesday, November 9. They say several calls have been made to the utility company, but no response was forthcoming.
Instead, a release was issued to the media Thursday, November 11, advising of plans to return power by Friday, November 12. The residents are demanding greater transparency. One fisherman noted that he often has to wonder if the system is set out to rob persons, as according to him; citizens are finding it difficult to enquire what exactly they are paying for.
Meanwhile, Member of Parliament for Kingston East and Port Royal, Phillip Paulwell, says efforts have been made to assist the residents especially fisherfolk.
Paulwell says he is provided ice and water to the residents. He also says the JPS is working assiduously to have power restored to the area at the earliest. This is the second time electricity has been disrupted in Port Royal this year.
