PORTLAND CRIME DOWN BY 28 PERCENT

The police in Portland are reporting a 28% reduction in major crimes, except for shootings.

The announcement was made by the head of the Portland police division, Deputy Superintendent Beresford Williams, at the division’s first media briefing for 2019 on Sunday the 29th of September.

Deputy Superintendent of police Beresford Williams says 80 crimes were recorded in Portland last year compared to 58 crimes recorded in the same period this year.

He adds that eight counts of aggravated assault recorded last year are down to 2, while robberies are down from 11 last year to 5 this year.

At the same time, DSP Williams renews the call for increased interaction between the police and residents as he notes, approximately 50 per cent of the murders for this year are related to domestic disputes.

During a meeting with residents in August, DSP Williams said there were efforts to reduce domestic violence in Portland.

According to him, these efforts are ongoing.\
