As Jamaica celebrates its 60th year of independence, conversation for the country to transition into a republic has resurfaced, this time with questions pointing to the ‘how’. A few months ago, Legal and Constitutional Affairs Minister Marlene Malahoo forte announced that the switch is slated to take effect by 2025, and with the proper constitutional protocols.
In an exclusive interview with CVM LIVE on Monday, Malahoo Forte reiterated that idea, underpinning the importance of public education as Jamaicans will need to vote for the switch through a referendum. The law minister says work will also be done to encourage people to vote in the referendum as political apathy continues to pose an issue. Watch the full report below:
