Members of the Joint Select Committee on the Criminal Justice Act are seeking public input on the proposed penalty increases for murder. Minister of Justice, Delroy Chuck, in a recent sitting of the Joint Select Committee, proposed massive penalty increases for convicted murderers.

The Minister hopes the proposed increases, will rebuild public trust in the court system by enacting laws that are reflective of society’s demand for justice the proposed penalty increases are as follows:

For persons convicted of capital murder, the minimum mandatory sentence will possibly move from 15 to 45 years if convicted of capital murder and sentenced to life in prison, the minimum sentence until eligible for parole will possibly increase from 20 to 50 years for non-capital murder the minimum sentence could also see an increase from 10 to 35 years

If convicted of non-capital murder and sentenced to life in prison, the minimum sentence could move from 15 to 45 years. Minster Chuck also said the increases in penalties will possibly apply to juveniles on murder charges as well, with the maximum sentence until eligible for parole potentially increasing to 20 years up from 10.
