Reaction From the Public Sector On Paternity Leave

The fulfillment of a paternity promise. Fathers in the public sector are rejoicing following the long awaited change in the Public Sector Staff Order of 2004. The newly instated act will grant fathers of newborns 20 days of paid leave.

Legal Officer at the Child Protection and Family Services Agency, Nicole Chambers, says she is in support of the historic move. Chambers says it is necessary in the Jamaican society as it provides fathers an opportunity to bond with their children, something that is missing in most families. Recounting her personal experience in another jurisdiction, she notes how her daughters remember priceless bonding time with their father.

She adds, it is also beneficial for mothers, as they too need help to care for the newborn. Parents are ready but is the public sector really ready? Chairman of the Police Federation, Corporal Rohan James says they are awaiting a written update in order to facilitate the changes. Meanwhile, the President of the Jamaica Association of Principals of Secondary Schools, Linvern Wright shares similar views. Wright adds there might only be a financial hiccup in the transition process.
