Residents Protest Police Shooting of Naggo Head Resident

The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) is probing an incident that unfolded in Naggo Head, Portmore, St. Catherine on Monday, which led to the shooting death of a 22-year-old man by the police. The shooting sparked a protest by some residents of the community, who are demanding justice.

Residents allege 21 year old Nicholas Standford was murdered in cold blood by police who initially came to investigate a killing in the community some hours before.

An aunt of the deceased 21 year old and also a cousin of the person who was murdered one night before Standford recalled the ordeal.

Salmon says she then overheard the police who shot her nephew report to his superiors that he shot Standford in the lane and not at the house.

The aunt alleges she intervened however, she was threatened by the cop.

She further showed the team that her nephew could not possibly be the one who fired the shots in white lane.

However, the Police tell a different story. They say approximately 8:10 pm, while responding to a murder scene at Foster Lane, gunshots were heard in their immediate vicinity. The officers proceeded on foot to the area, where a man was seen pointing a firearm at them, they fired in the direction of the man, who was shot and pronounced dead at hospital. It is further reported that a Beretta 9mm semi-automatic pistol was recovered from the scene.

INDECOM has launched an investigation into the shooting.
