Rio Cobre Oil Spill To Cost Millions

The recent oil spill in the Rio Cobre has prompted the National Irrigation Commission to halt its operations temporarily in the area due to a decline in water quality. Though the full extent of the damage remains uncertain, environmental experts express alarm, estimating potential costs in the millions. On December 11, a malfunctioning boiler at the Old Jamaica Beverage Plant leaked gallons of oil into the river, which serves as a primary source—supplying between 30 and 40 percent—of fresh water to Spanish Town and its surroundings. In response, the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) has issued an enforcement notice to the company, mandating the cleanup of the spill, with the possibility of legal action looming.
