Security Minister Promises New High-Security Prison In 2022

Plans are in place to construct a high-security prison to deter high-value criminals, who continue to organize crime through contract killings behind bars. National Security Minister, Dr. Horace Chang, during the Standing Finance Committee on March 1, said lands have been identified and will factor into the Ministry’s proposed budget for the financial year 2022/23.

Dr Chang also highlights plans to improve meal quality for inmates, noting the expanded budget from 59 million dollars to 247 million dollars will not only facilitate infrastructure but meals. A Community-based intervention is to be implemented, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education to reach vulnerable communities.

“We are ready to restore the police budget” – Dr. Chang. There are a number of critical areas being looked at in the Security Ministry. They are committed to improving police communication, mobility, and technology.

When asked about the billions used to feed inmates, Julian Robinson asked about the total of inmates accounted for, to which the Minister of Security said there are just over 3,000 inmates in correctional facilities in Jamaica. More details in this report:
