Senate Condemns Assassination Of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse

Both sides of the political divide in the Upper House on July 9, condemned the recent assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse.

Leader of Opposition Business in the Senate Peter Bunting, however, caused tension after posing questions as it relates to Jamaica’s partnership with the Organization of American States, OAS to further assist the sovereign state in a meaningful way.

Bunting also brought up the 2019 meeting of regional leaders with then-President of the United States, Donald Trump.

The former President was accused of manipulating the Organization of American States, OAS, and Caribbean leaders into doing his bid.

Responding to this, Leader of Government Business in the Upper House, Senator Kamina Johnson Smith said the Opposition was merely seeking a headline.

As more details begin to emerge, police are theorizing that a group of 28 foreign Mercenaries, including retired Colombian soldiers, are connected with the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse.

Four men were killed in an intense gun battle in the capital Port-Au-Prince on July 9 and 17 people were detained.

The motive and who organized the attack are still unclear.

The Haitian Government has since requested military assistance from the United States to help stabilize the country.

Asked if regional forces will be deployed to Haiti, Minister Johnson Smith highlights that the sovereign state will have to make such requests.
