Senator Bunting: Crime Takes Senate Centre-Stage

Speaking during the State of the Nation Debate in the Senate on Friday, September 24, Opposition Spokesman on National Security, Senator Peter Bunting, accused the Jamaica Constabulary Force, (JCF) of serving the interest of the elite.

The Opposition Spokesman notes myriad cases of perceived inequality in how the law treats the wealthy versus the poor.

From instances where politicians were spotted in breach of the Disaster Risk Management Act, (DRMA), to instances where alleged loc cutting cases got cold; Senator Bunting says the law appears to protect the elite. He noted that recently 40 Jamaicans were each fined $200,000 by the St. Thomas Parish Court for breaches of the DRMA, which he believes is an an enormous amount. He noted this while adding that there has been no future update on the similar penalties regarding the recent viral video in which former Agriculture Minister Floyd Green was seen along with other prominent persons on no movement day.

Meanwhile, he later explained the police has evolved to serve the interest of the elite. He notes other cases of alleged double standard, stating the only way the law can be executed properly is when it done without bias towards a particular class.
