In a recent probe by CVM News, a Jamaican family’s billing predicament raises questions about soaring electricity costs despite having solar energy for the past five years. The senior citizen, Mr. Griffiths, defines reasonable billing as ranging from 6,000 to 11,000 Jamaican dollars. However, he noticed a significant increase in his monthly bills, even after installing solar panels, recalling a monthly payment of approximately 14,000 dollars before adopting solar power.

Investigations revealed that Griffiths had unintentionally installed a commercial solar system instead of a residential one. Upon notifying his contractor, who admitted to the error, corrections were made at Griffiths’ expense. Despite the adjustments, subsequent months saw a new surge in monthly bills, ranging from 20,000 to 70,000 dollars, contrary to the contractor’s initial assurance that more panels would result in lower costs. The family, having invested over a million dollars in solar panels, remains determined to uncover the cause behind the billing discrepancies.
