Sporting initiatives are being credited for restoring peace and order in some eastern Kingston communities. After a number of criminal activities in those areas, the division’s commanding officer is commending the residents for using the sporting interventions as a tool to curtail crime. Sport is again being used as the antidote for crime in violent communities, the newest area impacted by this intervention being Dunkirk in Kingston.
This community and several neighboring ones were featured in the news numerous times last year, as its residents pleaded for a Zone of Special Operations (ZOSO) to control crime numbers.
Months later, both residents and the police are attesting to the significant reduction in violence since the first sports day was held last year. On Monday, organizers held another charity football competition to aid in bringing back the peace and feeling of security within the communities. She says the police’s presence during the events have been well received by residents.
Commanding officer for the Kingston eastern division, Senior Superintendent Tommie-Lee Chambers says the interventions have been fruitful. SSP Chambers is commending residents for cooperating with the police and doing what it takes to rid their communities of crime and violence.
