Member of Parliament for south west St. Ann, Zavia Mayne is talking tough about mining activities in sections of the constituency. He says the long term negative effects are usually disregarded, and are often felt by residents overtime. His controversial remarks come as he implores companies to employ sustainable mining.
Bauxite mining is usually presented as having endless positive economic benefits. However, MP Zavia Mayne is spotlighting the long-term effects of mining, suffered by residents, starting with farmers who’ve had to relinquish their land, their source of income, to bauxite companies. From his experience as an MP, Mayne sees how the health of his constituents have deteriorated.
He was speaking at a tree planting ceremony by the Noranda Bauxite Company. In the presence of Noranda’s Vice President Delroy Dell, Mayne went on to speak about the social disruption mining creates. Mayne however insists that he is supportive of Noranda’s plans for sustainable mining which promotes life after bauxite.
