The St. Catherine Adult Correctional Centre was raided by members of a multi-agency security team in search of contraband belonging to inmates on Friday, November 27.
This raid comes following the death of a Correctional Officer at the facility on November 13. The Officer was killed by an inmate who attacked him during the cell unlocking process. However, the inmate has since been charged.
The one hundred member multi agency security team swooped down on the Correctional Centre in search of cellular phones, knives, jammers and other contrabands.
Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of National Security, Matthew Samuda says the search was overdue.
According to Samuda the raid was recommended by the Commissioner of Corrections, Lieutenant Colonel Gary Rowe. Samuda adds that the security operation is one of the many interventions that will be taken by the Government to transform and improve the effective operation of Correctional facilities.
Minister Samuda says amendments to the legislative framework are coming early next year.
Meanwhile, he says the Government will continue to take the necessary intervention to ensure that Correctional Centres are free of contrabands.
