The church has reaffirmed its decision to tackle crime in Jamaica. Responding to calls made by Prime Minister Andrew Holness for the church to intervene Bishop Rowan Edwards, Chairman of the Ten Thousand Men and Families Movement says the church is ready to assist.
During a recently held meeting in Linstead, St Catherine, the clergyman says the constant bloodletting across Jamaica has forced the government to reimpose States of Public Emergency in several parishes.
Bishop Edwards notes communities that experience a surge in violence are often poverty-stricken. During the disclosure, the church leader also mentioned the impact of murder on the country reflecting on the life sentences handed down for the cocoa piece mass murder last year. He highlights that since Jamaica’s independence approximately 50,000 lives have been lost to crime.
