The St. Catherine South Police Division has earned accolades from Supreme Venture Racing and Entertainment Limited for their commendable efforts in curbing the homicide rate. Senior Superintendent of Police, Christopher Phillips, has led the division for the past two years, during which significant progress has been made. In 2021, St. Catherine reported 133 murders, followed by 115 in 2022, marking an 18-unit decrease. The positive trend persisted into 2023, concluding the year with 103 murders. Over this two-year period, the division achieved a notable 30 percent reduction in major crimes, earning them recognition.
Despite these accomplishments, Senior Superintendent Phillips expresses some disappointment, acknowledging the team fell short of their target to bring murders below 100. Phillips attributes their success to a team attuned to community dynamics, emphasizing the individualized approach to policing different communities. He acknowledges the challenges in this demanding environment but underscores the deliberate nature of their crime-fighting tactics. As the first responders, he also highlights the importance of caring for the well-being of the policing team.
