The main library in St. James has been closed until further notice due to a recent incident reportedly linked to high school students in the parish. CVM LIVE has received reports of a fire being lit by students destroying electrical wires leading to the temporary closure. However, as our news correspondent dug deeper into the story, it has been revealed that the incident was intentionally done by the students who constantly use the library space as an area for open sex, smoking and drinking.
One employee has described the development as chaos saying the activities have been ongoing for years. Despite the police being made aware, the students continue to use the area even after closing hours. It has also been reported that the fire lit at the library over the weekend was deliberately set by students, destroying electrical wires.
When CVM LIVE visited the location on Monday, we observed children returning books, but they were not allowed inside the building. CVM LIVE reached out to the Jamaica Library Service regarding the reports provided by the employee. We were advised that the Director General, Maureen Thompson was not available and asked to provide a number. We are yet to receive a response.
