St Thomas Farmers Query Need for Imported Onions

Farmers in St Thomas are seeking answers from the government after their onion production was hard hit by the government’s importation practices. The latest setback is among the concerns local onion farmers face in their quest to provide for their families.

On Monday Onion Farmers from Heartease and Llandewey communities in St Thomas took to the streets as they fume over what they describe as deliberate attempts by the government to handicap their production, causing little or no sale for their crop which has caused it to rot. The farmers are also protesting claims of the importation of onions at the expense of their produce. One young farmer says while the government continues to reiterate its calls for the famous grow what you eat, Eat what you grow campaign they are losing revenues due to high onion importation. Watch the interview:
