The people of St Thomas have been trading in their public passenger licenses for other income earners as they lament the rising cost and frequency of repair due to bad roads. Running low on members and inching closer to the brink of bankruptcy, Kirk Brown, the President of the Eastern St Thomas Taxi Association says their patience is wearing thin. Many a tale has been told about how poor road conditions in the last two to three years have led to the crashing of a robust public transportation system in the eastern parish.
An operator told CVM LIVE he spent 20 years operating as a taxi driver in the parish. He has since parked that business and opted to drive for a private firm lamenting the harsh blows dealt to his finances. Students added to the growing number of commuters who stood stranded at various bus stops Monday afternoon as the few remaining motorists struggle to transport the masses. All this while scores of public transport operators in sections of the country withdrew their services demanding better work conditions. Watch the full report:
