The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) intends to lobby for a litter penalty policy for those who continue to dispose of their garbage improperly. The announcement came from the Executive Director of the NSWMA, Audley Gordon while speaking to 6th form students at Meadowbrook High, recently.
According to Gordon, those who continue to litter must be held accountable for their actions. He made reference to the pile up of garbage along the streets and in the gullies. He notes that while there are garbage bins at specific locations, many persons refuse to use them, thereby, contributing to the garbage problem across several parishes.
He acknowledged that there are insufficient trucks and many do not abide by the schedule in place to collect garbage. However, while this is happening, he says the NSWMA intends to take quick action against those who continue to carelessly dispose their garbage.
According to Gordon, this move will allow for a cleaner environment as the NSWMA’s primary focus is on reducing the amount of waste generated and to improve overall waste management.
He says the NSWMA will continue to play its part in ensuring that waste is collected and disposed properly to prevent harm to the environment.
