Tavares-Finson Calls for Abolishment of Jury Trials

During the COVID-19 pandemic, trials adapted to new proceedings to protect the health of those involved; this led to single judges’ trials being held for an extended period. Against that background, comes the call from noted Attorney Tom Tavares-Finson Q, C to do away with jury trials, as it is not ingrained in the constitution. He notes that this will save time and resources.

Finson is calling for the discontinuation of jury trials as he says it reflects the reality that a majority of cases are tried by a single judge. The Attorney points out that in some cases where a jury is involved, the accused can opt for trial by a single judge. Highlighting that a single judge trial will save time and resources; he also advises that judges are drawn from sources other than the public prosecution department.
