Fisher-folk in Drapers, Portland was recently gifted well-needed boats by the Alligator Head Foundation; the foundation sourced funding through the Tourism Enhancement Fund and the US Embassy. Executive officer at the TEF, Carey Wallace says through tourism, Jamaica can increase its GDP and wealth among citizens. He believes that Jamaica has the original ingredients for a recipe of wealth; making it poised to be a first-world country. Wallace says through tourism, the average Jamaican has the potential to earn between 5-6 million Jamaican dollars each year which can make this a possibility.
He was speaking at the handing over ceremony of fishing boats, an investment that he hopes will build capacity in the community. General Manager of the Alligator Head Foundation Nicole Meyers says investing in local businesses promotes economic sustainability.
