Tense Funeral for Haiti’s Slain President Jovenel Moïse

The casket draped in Haiti’s blue-and-red flag on the grounds of a private compound, close to the town where slain President Jovenel Moïse was born.

First Lady Martine Moïse, who narrowly escaped the same fate as her husband and Haitians on July 23, bid their final farewell to the slain President.

Nearby gunfire and protests forced a high-level U.S. Delegation to leave abruptly and other dignitaries to take cover less than half-hour into the funeral.

First Lady Moïseis is demanding justice for her husband and says he was killed because he wanted to change a corrupt system.

President Moise was brutally killed at his home by men believed to be foreign nationals on July 7.

Haitian authorities say twenty-six were Colombians, many of them former soldiers, and two were Haitian-Americans.

Colombia’s government has pledged to assist Haiti with its investigation efforts.

Haiti’s government formally appointed Ariel Henry as Prime Minister on Tuesday, July 20.

He pledges to restore order and security to Haiti and form a Provisional Consensus Government until the elections.
