Too often violence is used as a means to remedy conflicts in schools and it almost always does not end well. As the Director of Safety and Security in Schools, Richard Troupe reminds us, with every choice there are consequences and deadly ones too.
He believes in order to create a safe environment; students must consider other alternatives to solving conflicts without being physical. Interestingly during the 2023 ‘Heal the Family, Heal the Nation’ National Day of Prayer Prime Minister Andrew Holness revealed plans to actively engage himself in educating students on the implications of negative actions.
The long-term consequences the officials stress cannot be overlooked. Back in 2022 Education Minister, Fayval Williams told the nation by November 2023, the plan is to reduce the level of violence in schools by 50%.
