Too Early to Link COVID-19 Spike to Dream Weekend

As more Jamaicans awaken from the joys of the recent Dream Weekend, the aftermath is now being scrutinized. There have been many videos circulating on social media with patrons breaching several Disaster Risk Management Act (DRMA) rules, however, the permit was not revoked.

Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton says the team ensured all the protocols were met but notes the public should have their own interests at heart. The Minister states that it is important to not burden the public health team and other agencies with added responsibility and accountability must be taken seriously.

President of the Negril Chamber of Commerce Richard Wallace, says it is still too early to observe how the series of Dream Weekend parties have affected the COVID-19 numbers. Wallace says he is also calling for a halt on what he calls the sensationalizing of increases in COVID-19 cases at hotels. He notes that thousands of visitors arrive on the island daily therefore growing COVID-19 numbers will be inevitable.

He notes that he is also seeing an increase in hotel workers being vaccinated in Western Jamaica, and is encouraging others to take the jab to quicken the journey back to normality.
