What was meant to be just another tourist journey for 53-year-old Negril tour operator Byron Gray, turned deadly Monday night, along the West End main road in Negril, Westmoreland. The Negril Chamber of Commerce President has condemned the incident, noting continued concerns about crime in the resort town. The police say at about 9:30, the tour operator was transporting two male tourists in his Toyota Voxy bus when upon reaching a section of the road, two men on a motorcycle drove up beside his vehicle. The pillion rider then reportedly pulled a firearm and shot at Gray who continued driving; however, the gunmen were determined to complete their deadly mission. According to the police, gray drove a short distance before his vehicle careened off the road and landed on an embankment.
The perpetrators then escaped in the direction of the Negril town centre. When the police and firefighters arrived Gray was seen with multiple gunshot wounds to the head and upper body, while one tourist received a broken nose and the other a broken left arm. They were both taken to the savanna-la-mar public general hospital where they were treated and released.
The Head of the Westmoreland Police Division Senior Superintendent Wayne Joseph, tells CVM LIVE there are no leads, but investigations continue. He’s also urging anyone with relevant information to come forward.
SSP joseph has also confirmed that the tourists have left the island. Meanwhile, President of the Negril Chamber of Commerce and prominent hotelier, Richard Wallace spoke briefly with our news team on Tuesday.
