Tragic Loss, Haiti Hit Hard Again – What Next?

Haiti’s place in the Caribbean is steeped in history. The country has suffered, grave instability and long-standing political tension. Haiti, the first Caribbean nation to break from the shackles of colonial rule, has been marred by claims of corruption and violence, as successive governments have found maintaining law and order a difficult task.

The country of about eleven million people remains the most impoverished nation in the Caribbean. The president of the Haiti-Jamaica society, says there is no greater cry for help but the assassination of a president.  

President Jovenel Moise’s assassination has sparked fear around the possibility of a civil war, as this brazen attack magnifies the reality of no one being safe in Haiti.

President of the Haiti-Jamaica society and diaspora representative on the commission for a Haitian solution to the crisis says it is a very tense, difficult, and painful situation. 

Myrtha Desulme says the people of Haiti are not only in mourning because of the tragic loss of the president but also for the country itself. 

She says there is still so much uncertainty around the president’s tragic assassination at his private residence, adding that the truth needs to be uncovered.
