Trelawny Farmers Protest Alleged Lease Dispute

Farmers in Trelawny staged a protest over what they are describing as unfair treatment under a lease for land allocated to them after the closure of a sugar factory in the parish. They say the agreement signed is not being honoured and are calling on the authorities to intervene.

Caretaker candidate, Northern Trelawny Dennis Meadows explained that upon the closure of the factory, it was envisioned farmers whose livelihoods were disrupted, would be allotted acres of land to mitigate against any economic crisis. 

The farmers are now alleging that the land would be taken from them. To make matters worse they claimed they’re being asked to pay up to ten thousand dollars per acre for lands being used. A definite deal breaker, as they say, this wasn’t the initial plan. Watch the report below:
