US Cash Smuggler Fined, Forfeiture Proceedings to Follow

A New Jersey security guard was convicted in the St James Parish Court, on Friday, for smuggling cash in his luggage. His action was thwarted when he was nabbed by local law enforcement at the Donald Sangster International Airport on April 10, 2021 with over 50-thousand us dollars.

He was been fined one million Jamaican dollars or he could spend six months in prison. The Financial Investigations Division (FID) successfully secured the conviction of a US citizen in The St James Parish Court for concealment of criminal property and possession of criminal property.

Kenardo Coke, a 30-year-old security guard from New Jersey, was fined 500,000 Jamaican dollars on each offence or 6 months imprisonment. The conviction follows the seizure of USD 50,400 from Coke on April 10, 2021 at the Donald Sangster International Airport. A court hearing is set for June 23, 2023, in respect of forfeiting the cash under section 79 of the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA).

The FID’s Principal Director of Investigation, Keith Darien, is commending the work of law enforcement and partner agencies for the latest conviction and pending forfeiture. Darien says depriving criminals of their illicit gains will indirectly help to reduce the crime rate fueled by funding from locals investing from overseas.
