UWI Students Overwhelmed By Tuition Costs Quoted In USD

Students at the University of the West Indies – U.W.I, Mona, where tuition fees are quoted in U.S. Dollars will have to pay up to $100,000 more for the upcoming academic year. This comes despite the university’s promise to not raise fees in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Students from the Faculties of Law, Medical Sciences, and Engineering will be especially affected.

The announcement is met by outraged students who describe the University’s decision as callous. Tamoy Campbell is the second year representative of the Mona Law Society, she says the sudden jump in the tuition fees is causing unwanted distress for struggling students.

The cancellation of the student work and travel programme already has thousands of students searching for ways to finance the upcoming school year. Campbell insists that students should not be left to shoulder the economic burden of the health crisis.

Guild President at U.W.I. Mona, Sujae Boswell says the increase in tuition will severely compromise students’ ability to enroll for the 2020/2021 academic year. U.W.I. Mona registrar, Dr. Donovan Stanberry says senior management at the University will be meeting to discuss the concerns raised by the students to determine the way forward.
