Is Violence Overwhelming Our Schools? – Verbally Abusive Teacher Met With Backlash

Concerns are being raised as it relates to the Teacher-Student relationship within the Education Sector.

This became more evident with a video circulating on social media, of a Teacher threating a student of the Pembroke Hall High School in the Corporate Area.

An investigation has been launched into the circumstances that led to the incident escalating to that point.

The enraged Teacher has not been sent on leave, and still remains active at the institution, however she has been asked to provide a detailed report on the matter.

In the video, the Teacher is heard threatening the student.

The Principal of the institution, Reverend Claude Ellis is disappointed in the Teacher’s behaviour.

He says the School Board Chairman and the Acting Chief Education Officer have been advised of the incident, and action will be taken after a thorough investigation.

President of the Jamaica Teachers Association (JTA), Owen Spied says there is a bigger problem.

He is suggesting anger management classes being incorporated in the curriculum for teachers, students and also parents.

The scenario leading up to the recording stemmed from an allegation by a female student in another class, who claims the boy had stolen her phone.

They boy then started shouting at the teacher and the girl, accusing her of lying. He did not comply with the teacher’s demands to desist.

And the incident escalated.

Meanwhile the Ministry of Education has also denounced the teacher’s behavior.

Minister Karl Samuda is reminding teachers employed in the public education system that they are expected to act with professionalism and decorum while conducting classes, notwithstanding challenges dealing with difficult and uncooperative students.

He says the behaviour displayed is unacceptable and has no place in our schools,
