A Jamaican wanted man arrested in Cayman on Friday was reportedly released before being rearrested for a minor drug offence Monday, for which he was not subsequently charged. Thirty-year-old Rudolph Shaw otherwise called Boxer was brought before the court Tuesday. His lawyer argued that as a result of not having enough evidence to charge her client, who was arrested on suspicion of illegal entry, his detention was unlawful.
Police in Cayman on Tuesday told the court that they were forced to release one of Jamaica’s most notorious criminals. Shaw who is wanted for multiple murders in Jamaica, was arrested after a brief midday chase during which he rammed a police vehicle with the car he was driving. On Tuesday questions of his release left the prosecutors insisting that Shaw never left custody and was not put back on the streets of Cayman. However concerns swirled about the handling of the matter and why the drug charges against the Jamaican, were ultimately not pursued.
Shaw was initially arrested on suspicion of illegal landing and taken into custody at the detention centre in Fairbanks, George Town. The charge against him in Cayman was initially an immigration offence. His Attorney Prathna Bodden demanded answers over how her client had been kept in custody beyond the legal time limit for him to be charged or released.
She insists, either the police messed up and did not charge him in time and therefore kept him in custody longer than they should have, or they released him on bail. Shaw was remanded in custody and is expected to return to court in coming weeks.
Meantime the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) in a statement confirmed Shaw was pursued in Jamaica by the Joint Anti-Gang Task Force (JAGTF) and other police units but managed to elude capture before leaving the island by boat.
Sources told CVM LIVE once the necessary processes are completed, he will be returned to the Jamaican authorities.
