Wetland in Negril Caught Fire During Easter Break

A wetland in Negril, Westmoreland caught fire during the Easter weekend, affecting scores of residents within the area.

Though the cause for the fire is unknown, residents say this is a common occurrence. Morass, which many refer to as swamps or marshes is vital in preventing flooding and removing nutrients from water before it exits into the sea.

Residents say though the smoke affects them, it is not novel. President of the Negril Chamber and hotelier Richard Wallace says the smoke is a nuisance to residents especially those with respiratory illnesses.

He says there is a current project to prevent this yearly natural disaster that not only threatens humans but damages the country’s ecosystem. Meanwhile, Wallace says despite the pandemic, tourism flow seems to have taken a turn on a more positive road. He says he believes the worst is behind them.
