WHO Calls on High-income Countries to Suspend COVID-19 Booster Shots – The World Health Organization (WHO) is appealing to wealthy countries to suspend the administering of third doses of the COVID-19 vaccines until the end of September.

This while urging high-income countries to donate more vaccine supplies to low-income countries in greater need, in order to give the world a chance to meet the Director-General’s goal of vaccinating 10% of the population of every country by the end of September.

COVID-19 vaccine inequity is of much concern globally, as poorer countries with rising infection cases continue to struggle in gaining access to adequate supplies.

According to WHO’s Director-General Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus, high-income countries have already administered almost 100 doses for every 100 people, while low-income countries have only been able to administer 1.5 doses to every 100 people due to lack of supply.

Ghebreyesus is calling on the leaders of the g20 summit, ahead of their meeting in October to prioritize the global distribution of vaccines, as they will determine the course of the pandemic.

Even as efforts are being made to contain the virus, more and more variants are emerging.
