Winnifred Beach is the next in line to undergo major infrastructural improvements through the Tourism Enhancement Fund’s (TEF) beaches programme.
With the improvements, the beach will remain free for public access as well as include commercial stalls, and other amenities for ease of access to the beach and its surrounding areas.
However, locals fear this may take away from the authenticity of Jamaica’s natural resources and shun opportunities for local entrepreneurship.
In an effort to ease the concerns of the people, Executive Director at TEF Carey Wallace, explained that the plans are a collaboration with the people, rather than a takeover.
TEF plans to improve the bathroom facilities of the beach as well as make it accessible to persons with disabilities. There are also plans to install kiosks and shops for local traders.
