The Ministry of Labour and Social Security last Wednesday, offered assistance to the victims of the May Pen Market fire which took place on December 1st. The total number of vendors who lost goods is numbered at approximately 105. Several of whom were on hand at the Ministry to collect their cheques.
Member of Parliament for Central Clarendon, Mike Henry, in whose constituency the market is located, made an appeal to Minister Shahine Robinson to assist.
Minister Robinson said that she considered the matter and losses faced by the vendors at the beginning of the Christmas season, and sought to make an exception and give as much assistance as possible.
Mr. Henry expressed his appreciation for the support and the vendors in attendance also echoed his sentiments. The rebuilding of the market is said be a major priority for the Central Clarendon Member of Parliament and set to commence in the New Year.
The cheques were based on the categories of loss suffered by the vendors and ranged in amounts from $15,000 to $30,000.
