The new Firearms Bill was approved in the House of Representatives on Wednesday, with the support of opposition members of the house.
Despite major concerns from Opposition Leader Mark Golding, he emphasized the problem of violent crime in the country is a chronic one. The bill which among other punitive measures, proposes a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years imprisonment for illegal gun possession.
Golding however pointed out a few concerns as it relates to the court, noting that the judiciary plays a critical role in the justice system.
In closing the debate, National Security Minister, Dr. Horace Chang, advises that the structure for mandatory sentencing will still allow the judges to issue the certificate.
Dr. Chang reassures that this new bill will not impair any innocent individual. The Firearms Act also recommends life imprisonment for possession of three or more illegal guns, not eligible for parole before 20 years. More details here:
