From a fifty-seven million dollar claim to sixteen million that is the new compensation plan for fisher folks impacted by the July/August fish kill.
Minister with responsibility for the Environment Senator Matthew Samuda says with the Rio Cobre contamination costs exceeding 200 million dollars the government plans to amend the Wildlife Protection Act and the Natural Resources Conservation Authority Act to increase fines and penalties.
However, Shadow Minister of Land, Environment and Climate Change, Senator Sophia Frazer -Binns says plans to compensate fisher folks impacted by the recent Rio Cobre fish kill with sixteen million dollars is insufficient.
She also questions how the sixteen million dollars will be shared among fisher folks. Senator Frazer Binns also disclose the need for greater urgency to amend legislation and increase fines for people or organizations who pollute the island’s rivers.
