Come September 3, the People’s National Party will be seeking to reclaim Portland Eastern. The PNP lost the seat to the JLP’s Annmarie Vaz in a by-election in April 2019 following the death of Dr. Lynvale Bloomfield. Now, the PNP’s candidate Bishop Dr. Purcell Jackson is on a mission to turn back the tide.
Jackson was nominated as the PNP candidate for this General Election. JLP Candidate Annmarie Vaz was asked about her interaction with Jackson on the campaign trail and what she would say if she encountered him.
“Welcome to Portland and if he needs a tour guide I will supply one for him,” said Vaz. “Not me, I will appoint someone , I am very busy carrying out my agenda that I set out from 2019.”
PNP Candidate Bishop Dr. Purcell Jackson, is however, confident in his party’s chances in contesting the seat and winning in the upcoming election.
“The proof of the pudding is in the eating. All the talk and fanfare don’t win an election,” he said. “It is pulling out your voters on the day and people who trust you will come and vote for you. I am positive we have done the work building the trenches and on that day let’s see who laughs last.”
Portland Eastern was won by the PNP’s Donald Rodd in 2007 and won by the PNP’s Dr Lynvale Bloomfield in 2011 and 2016. The question around who will win the seat will be determined on September 3, 2020 when Vaz and Jackson face off at the polls.
