Speaking at the 2022 Global Programming Conference in the Republic of Korea, Minister without Portfolio for Economic Growth and Job Creation Matthew Samuda, provided a report on Jamaica’s trajectory with climate change.
Samuda notes an increase in rainfall as a major highlight over the years, exceeding the average rate on a monthly basis.
He explains, that as a result, this has led to sea levels rising over a millimeter annually, while storms and hurricanes in the region have also increased in frequency and intensity.
The Senator says the impact of these extreme weather conditions has proven costly for the government.
He further notes the assessments emerging from the changes in the weather patterns suggest the government is likely to lose as much as 10 percent for the same period with the current changes between now and 2040.
The Minister highlighted steps the Jamaican government and environmental bodies have taken to preserve the environment. More details here:
