Thanksgiving Service for Detective Corporal Dane Biggs

It was an atmosphere of grief and mourning at the thanksgiving service for a slain cop who was killed with two other colleagues in an operation in Horizon Park St Catherine. Family members remembered the corporal through their tributes in words and song. Commissioner of Police Major General Antony Anderson says the corporal’s wish for the country was centered around public safety and security and control over crime.

“Although he will no longer be apart of that we who are left to honour his life can be apart of that and use that to motivate our actions.”

Shadow Minister of National Security, Fitz Jackson spoke of the late Detective Corporal as an Officer who loved his job and encouraged officers to have that same drive in fighting crime.

“We perhaps have to find a way that we can make our Police Officers like our Nurses and teachers in what they do on a daily basis, that they love to do, they can spend a career doing it feeling fulfilled for the rest of their lives.”

The Minister of National Security, Dr. Horace Chang also provided remarks at the service.

“During his ten years of service to the force Detective Corporal Biggs would have honed his skills and would have become one of Jamaica’s finest Law enforcement Officers which meant his potential to further advance in the force. He went forth in some of the most dangerous situations. Detective Corporal Biggs never backed down.”

The Prime Minister, though not in attendance at the Thanksgiving service also sent words of encouragement to the family of the late Police officer via video.

“On behalf of the Government of Jamaica, I thank the families of the officers we have lost for their contribution in building this great nation through enforcing the law and protecting law-abiding citizens.”

Hundreds of Police officers have been killed in the line of duty since the establishment of the Jamaica Constabulary Force and there are calls for a monument to be established in their honor.
