Trelawny has seen the highest percentage of increase in road fatalities since the start of the year. The parish recorded 13 deaths this time last year; now that number stands at 24, almost double.
However, Vice Chairman of the National Road Safety Council, Dr. Lucien Jones says Trelawny is not the only parish experiencing this rise, noting other western parishes are also seeing same.
He attributes this rise to motorists who are speeding, not wearing helmets and ignoring road codes. Adding, motor vehicles also tend to have multiple passengers, and therefore multiple fatalities.
Dr. Jones says there has not been an increase in police patrolling spaces that are known to be crash hot spots, a plan is afoot for that to be implemented.
Adding, the authorities will also be clamping down on motorists who habitually disobey traffic light signals.
He estimates the new Road Traffic Act is slated to be implemented in early January 2023.
