Following the Governor General’s decision to suspend the use of the order of St Michael badge, an insignia which depicts a white angel standing on the neck of a black man said to portray the devil, after it was criticized as being racist and similar to the circumstances in which George Floyd lost his life.
The discussion surrounding the symbolism of oppression has gained renewed vigor as well as the debate as to whether Jamaica should still be governed by a monarchy that promotes racist symbology.
