The antagonistic relationship between transport operators and the police was further stretched on Friday, September 3, following the fatal shooting of taxi operator Shawn Fennel in the North Parade section of Downtown Kingston, sparking protests.
Senior Superintendent of Police and Head of CCU, Stephanie Lindsay and Egeton Newman, President of Transport Lobby Group TODSS, joined the CVM Live Panel Discussion to share on the topic of police use of force and transport operators.
SSP Lindsay noted that in regards to the use of force policy, a police officers can resort to using force he or she believes their lives are being threatened by a particular action. Edgeton Newman however expressed that the colleagues of the deceased taxi operators were sadden by his passing and have concerns of their own. He also added that the issue with police officers and the use of force have been reoccurring and he believes the time has come for more methodologies to be be put in place that lessen situations that will result in harm.
