Known by the moniker “Marvelous Marvin Hagler,” he was the eldest child of Robert Sims and Ida Mae Hagler. Hagler’s journey in boxing began at the age of ten when he first put on a pair of boxing gloves. At the age of 15, in 1969, he transitioned to amateur boxing. Throughout his amateur career, he achieved a string of victories, including winning the National Amateur Athletic Title, where he was honored as the outstanding boxer of the tournament.
